The chessboard is perhaps the most underrated part of the game of chess. After all, this is the surface where all the action happens. Sure, it may seem like just a checkerboard, but the chess board is more than just alternating squares. Think about your favorite chess memories and no doubt you will be able to picture the kind of board you were playing on. Perhaps it was the travel chess set of your childhood. Maybe it is the games you played with your grandpa on the wooden board he kept in his closet. Perhaps you remember a marble chess set and the heavy weight of the pieces. Maybe you saved your pennies to buy a premium board from the House of Staunton. Without a doubt, the chessboard is integral to the emotional side of chess. Some of us were given chessboards as gifts from family and friends fortunate enough to travel abroad and bring back a one-of-a-kind chessboard. Maybe you collect chessboards and you treasure each one for different reasons.
